The Underground Youth - Décollage

Berlin-based post-punk band The Underground Youth, led by Blackpool-born musician and author Craig Dyer, marks a bold evolution with their twelfth studio album, 'Décollage'. Self-written, recorded, and produced by Dyer, the album embodies a process of artistic deconstruction inspired by the technique of décollage: tearing apart existing works to create something new. Layers of static-drenched hip-hop drum samples, Hazlewood-esque string arrangements, and Gainsbourg-inspired mellotron melodies form chaotic soundscapes, which Dyer meticulously dismantled to reveal a fresh sonic direction. The result is a trip-hop-infused exploration of themes like ancestry, revolution, and the hope for rebirth amidst chaos, blending ghostly minimalism with dramatic crescendos of noise and melody.

Formed by Dyer as a solo project in 2008, The Underground Youth now includes drummer and visual artist Olya Dyer, guitarist and producer Leonard Kaage, and bassist Samira Zahidi. Over 12 albums and 4 EPs, the band has evolved from cinematic lo-fi psychedelia to melancholic post-punk and gothic folk-noir, cultivating a devoted global following through extensive tours across Europe, Asia, and North America. Following 2023’s introspective 'Nostalgia’s Glass', 'Décollage' reimagines the past in search of a hauntological future, showcasing the band's ability to transform and innovate within the boundaries of their distinctive sound.
